Background of the study
Work-life balance is increasingly recognized as a critical determinant of employee retention, particularly in the health sector where long working hours and high stress levels are common. In Enugu North, health professionals often grapple with the challenge of maintaining equilibrium between professional responsibilities and personal life, leading to burnout and high turnover rates (Ndukwe, 2023). Recent studies underscore that an optimal work-life balance not only improves employee well-being but also enhances productivity and service quality (Okafor, 2024). This study explores the factors that contribute to work-life balance and how they relate to employee retention in healthcare institutions. Emphasis is placed on flexible scheduling, supportive management, and the implementation of wellness programs that can reduce stress and increase job satisfaction. The research synthesizes current trends with qualitative insights from health professionals, aiming to offer evidence-based recommendations for improving retention rates. Furthermore, it examines the interplay between organizational policies and individual coping strategies, thereby addressing both structural and personal dimensions of work-life balance (Chinonso, 2023). Through this investigation, the study seeks to contribute to a more sustainable and motivated health workforce in Enugu North.
Statement of the problem
Healthcare institutions in Enugu North are experiencing high turnover rates, partly due to poor work-life balance among employees (Amadi, 2023). Extended shifts, insufficient rest periods, and stressful work environments contribute to burnout and dissatisfaction, ultimately affecting retention. Despite efforts to implement supportive policies, gaps remain between organizational practices and the needs of health professionals. This study aims to investigate the underlying causes of poor work-life balance and its effect on employee retention, seeking to identify strategies that could enhance job satisfaction and stability (Okonkwo, 2024).
